President’s Message, September 2013

Welcome Back!

We are excited to start this new school year with some exciting new fundraisers, PTA Sponsored activities and more! The summer seemed to have flown by but your PTA is ready to serve you; the parents and students of Dr. Sally K Ride.

Our goals this year are to not only increase PTA Membership but to also increase parent participation in all PTA and School activities. We also need to raise money that will benefit the students and the school. We usually meet the first Tuesday of the month at 7PM in the media center, though some months will have a small change. In September we will be meeting briefly on Sept. 16th and 17th at Back to School Nights.. Make sure to visit our website at on a regular basis to learn about upcoming events, fundraisers, spirit wear and much more. The PTA is always in need of volunteers to help with all of our events so please contact us to see how you can help.

We start off the new school year with the Back to School Nights, come meet the staff and learn more about what YOUR PTA does for you! Also, be on the lookout for the FLES and Big Science Learning Programs brochures in your students take home folders and the date for the September Restaurant night. October will bring our first family event with our traditional Sweets & Treats event on October 4th starting at 7PM. We will also begin our main fundraiser, new this year, Mixed Bags. Remember all fundraising goes directly to the students!

We’d also like to extend a huge thank you to Bounce-U for sponsoring our teachers’ back to school breakfast and to all the parents who brought in food for the kindergarten teacher’s back to school dinner! We also really appreciate all the help from parents who are helping man the PTA tables at back to school nights.

Hope to see you at our next PTA meeting!

President’s Message, October 2013

It’s hard to believe that we already have a month behind us in this school year! September was a busy month getting the kids and ourselves back into the routine of school life.

I’d like to thank all the volunteers and PTA board members who made the back to school breakfast and dinners a success. Without our volunteers we would not be able to support our school and its  staff.

September also brought our first restaurant night fundraiser at Baja Fresh where we brought in a little over $47.00. A BIG thanks to the families and friends that participated. Let’s try to at least triple this amount October 16th when we have our restaurant night at Red Robin from 5-9PM. Remember that this is an easy way to help raise money for all the programs we help fund.

October will also bring back a school favorite, Sweets & Treats.  It’s October 4th from 7-8:30 pm at SKR.  Make a treat, bring a treat and buy a treat! Also this month and new this year is our big fundraiser of Mixed Bag Designs. These are great as gifts and once you see them you will want a few! The book fair will end our month from the 21st to the 25th; volunteers are needed for this event to run smoothly, please contact Erica Seib to volunteer.

Being part of the PTA also brings a voice to many issues that are being discussed on the county and state level. Here is what is going on this month: On October 7th at Richard Montgomery High School, there will be a forum on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention from 7-9 PM.  To learn more please visit

Another important issue on the table is the proposed Rapid Transit Line along MD 355 which could  have a negative impact on our community. There will be a roundtable meeting on October 3rd at the Executive Office Building Cafeteria at 01 Monroe Street in Rockville. We need to know what you think about this issue, so as the voice of Sally K. Ride we can make a difference and keep our community safe. For more information please visit:

Please make sure to join us at our first PTA meeting of the school year October 1st at 7PM in the Media Center, all are welcome and remember you do not have to be a PTA member to attend, only to vote! Once again, thank you to all who help make our school SOAR!!!
